World Cup Prep: HNS Announces Friendly Between Croatia and Senegal in Osijek

A meeting of the Croatian Football Federation’s Executive Committee was held on Thursday, which, among other things, confirmed a friendly match against Senegal in Osijek.

Osijek’s City Garden Stadium will host a friendly match between Croatia and Senegal on June 8, 2018, confirmed the Executive Committee of the Croatian Football Federation. It will be the last test of the Croatia national team before their departure for the World Cup in Russia, reports HNS on February 22, 2018.

Though Croatia has yet meet Senegal, the African side currently sits at 27th place in the FIFA ranking of the best national teams in the world and is the second best African national team. In 2002, Senegal reached the quarterfinals of the World Cup in Japan and South Korea though they lost to Turkey 0:1 in the 94th minute.

In Russia, the Senegalese forces will fight in a group against Poland, Colombia and Japan, while Croatia awaits Nigeria, Argentina and Iceland.

“Senegal is excellent preparation for Nigeria and is one of the best African selections. I’m sure we will have a great atmosphere in Osijek before leaving for Russia. I believe in Croatia’s strength, and we want to be able to play in Russia with the strongest selections – a match against Senegal fits great in our preparation for the World Cup,” said the Croatia national team manager Zlatko Dalić.

The Croatian national team will be in the US next month, where they will play two of the most anticipated friendly matches. Croatia will face Peru on March 23, 2018, at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami, and four days later, the team will face Mexico at AT & T Stadium in Dallas.

Before the World Cup in Russia, the Croatia national team should also play a friendly match with Brazil on June 3, 2018, at Liverpool’s Anfield stadium. Though international media has reported this is true, we are still awaiting confirmation from HNS.

In addition, the Executive Committee discussed the final of the Croatian Cup in Vinkovci and the infrastructure of Croatian stadiums.
