Poreč and its environs are an epicentre for athletes, but also youth, which is what the Croatian School Sports Federation managed to prove to the International School Sports Federation when they were entrusted to host the 24th World School Basketball Championship
The Championship will be held in four facilities and six courts simultaneously; Žatika in Poreč, with two courts, Intersport in the Zelena Laguna hotel oasis, where competitors are situated, Veli Jože in Poreč and sports hall in Pazin, Jutarnji List wrote on April 30, 2017.
The global competition will host 60 teams, 32 male and 28 female. High schoolers arrived to Istria from four continents: Asia, Europe, South America and Oceania.
The Croatian national team as the host has the right to compete with two schools in both categories. The team from Zagreb’s 3rd Gymnasium, full of cadets and juniors of the Cibona basketball team, is led by Boris Gnjidić, former Croatian basketball player. Maro Puljić is the coach of Dubrovnik Gymnasium, which will strive to do its best.
The 3rd Gymnasium also sent a female team, coached by Ana Čačić. The second female team comes from Šibenik, coached by Marijan Tepić.
The group phase began today at 09:00 with 730 players, 120 coaches and supporting staff.
