Heavy rain disrupted the second day of the WTA tournament Bol Open so three of the singles matches were not finished as scheduled.

There were problems on June 1, 2016, in Bol due to rain delays, but good news prevailed at the end as most matches finished on time, and Croatia got one more player in the second round. The last match of the day between Rodina and Minelle was moved to Thursday.

Petra Martić lost the first set against the Slovenian Polona Hercog 2-6 but managed to rally for the turnaround after the match was resumed even though she was losing 1-3 at the time. She won the second set with 6-4 but fell short in the third not being able to catch up the Hercog 3-0 lead. The final score was 6-2, 4-6, 6-1 for Hercog.

“I lost my strength in the third set. I am not 100% ready returning after the injury. I had a few chances to get back in this match in the third set at 1-3 but I could not make it”- said Martić

“I know Petra very well, we were roommates, trained together. I am not very happy with my performance in this match but I made it to the second round and that is important. I think that this was a match worth more than the first round of this tournament”- said Polona Hercog.

Marina Erakovic was the second player with the strong local support to make it into the second round. Born in Split but playing for New Zealand, Erakovic played against the Japanese Kurumi Nara who had to forfeit at 3-3 in the first set due to the leg injury. “I am sad that my opponent had to forfeit today. At 2-1 she already had some problems with her leg and she couldn’t make it through. She had problems with her service. It is hard to win the match in these conditions. “– said Marina

At the end of the day, under the lights of the reflectors, Ana Konjuh made it convincingly to the second round beating the American Grace Min 6-1, 6-3. Next opponent for her will be Turkish player Ipek Soylu who is trained by the Croatian coach, Goran Prpić.

Notably, first seeded player of the tournament Anna Karolina Schmiedlova already ended her episode in Bol losing to the fellow Slovak Kristina Kucova. Schmiedlova has been trying to regain the momentum for a long time now, but, unfortunately, she couldn’t find it in Bol.
