The WTA Croatia Bol Open will take place at the Bluesun tennis center through June 10, 2018.
The WTA Croatia Bol Open kicked off on Tuesday with the first round of fantastic matchups. After a formal dinner at Elaphusa Hotel’s restaurant and a welcoming speech by the director of the tournament Feliks Lukas, which everyone enjoyed, the WTA Croatia Bol Open players party continued at the Bolero lounge bar with cocktails and dance music.
Because of today’s tennis matches, however, the players did not stay too long, while those not competing in the tournament enjoyed the entertainment until the early morning hours.
On day two of the tournament, Slovenian tennis player Tamara Zidanšek, 122nd on the WTA list, surprised everyone by throwing out the third-seed of the tournament, Ajla Tomljanović, with a convincing 6:3, 6:1 victory. Zidanšek was extremely motivated and has played excellent tennis recently in the ITF tournaments – and she’s even come close to guaranteed direct entry into Grand Slam competitions. Today in Bol, she has shown great strides in doing so:
“This is my fourth win against top 100 players in my career. I’ve only seen Alja play on television, never live. I did not know what to expect, but I did well and won,” said an excited Zidanšek who trains in Ptuj, is 20 years old and has shown that she can enter the top 100. Ajla is currently ranked 69. In a way, this is the win of the Slovenian player’s career.
Mandy Minella of Luxembourg, the winner of Bol in 2016, also played an excellent match and defeated China’s Zheng 7:5, 6:3. Minella showed just how serious she is this year.
“I feel great in Bol; I hope to repeat the story of two years ago. No tournament in the world has such good conditions and atmosphere,” said Minella.
Tenas Lukas put a smile on the face of WTA Croatia Bol Open crowd. Thanks to her performances in the FED Cup team, she received an invitation to the tournament and returned in the best possible way. In her first round match and the central court of the Bluesun center, she overcame Spanish player Estrella Cabeza Candela 6:1, 6:0.
“I did not expect such a convincing victory, but I deserved it, I played great,” Tena said.
How was it playing at home?
“It’s a lot easier to play in front of your fans, and when I need to, I feel that extra energy that moves me forward.”
Does Tena think she could win the tournament?
“Easy. I will enjoy this victory now and it wouldn’t be a bad thing if I went that far,” concluded the Kaštela tennis player.
