ZAGREB, July 23, 2018 – The Croatian Adriatic coast is the most popular summer destination for Croats, with 62 percent of them saying they spend their summer holidays there, a survey by Mastercard and the GfK market research agency shows.

Some 46 percent of respondents choose private accommodation, 41 percent stay in their own properties or those of their families, 12 percent prefer to stay in hotels and 6 percent in camps.

The survey was carried out online in May on a sample of 1,000 people aged 18-55 who use banking services. Of those who plan to spend their summer holidays on the Adriatic coast this year, between 70 and 80 percent come from Zagreb and northern Croatia and 84 percent have a monthly salary of 12,000 kuna and more.

On the other hand, 22 percent of those surveyed will not go on holiday on the Croatian coast. Previous similar surveys have shown that more than 50 percent of Croats will not travel for summer holidays for lack of money.

For 77 percent of respondents expenses are the main factor in choosing a destination. Other factors are recommendations from family and friends, distance, online reviews, and security. Accommodation costs and the price to quality ratio are the most important details to some 60 percent of those surveyed, while about 40 percent attach importance to transport costs, culture and cuisine.

About 60 percent pay for their accommodation with cash. For some 90 percent of respondents the internet is the main source of information about their destination, while all other sources, such as family, friends and tourist agencies, are much less relevant.

They mostly book their accommodation online. Some 40 percent use specialised booking sites or tourist agency websites, 26 percent do so through the website of the accommodation provider, 13 percent said they do not need a reservation at all, 8 percent make their reservation through a tourist agency, and only 4 percent first come to their destination and then seek accommodation.
