Cycling in Croatia: A New Leap in Cycle Tourism in the Town of Pag

Katarina Anđelković

August 1, 2023 – Cycling in Croatia is an adventure on its own. Whether that’s the plains and fields of Slavonia, the hills of Lika, or the rocky terrain of the seaside, there is plenty to discover. Croatian creatives and entrepreneurs have caught onto that and designed the perfect tool to help.

Bikademy, an innovative cycling tourism product that we have followed for a while, has opened a new Study – the town of Pag and the southern part of the island of Pag. It comes as a perfect puzzle piece to their Novalja Study and the northern part of the island, opened last October. It ensures that cycle tourists, cyclists, and recreationists can discover unique locations and win their cycling rewards regardless of where they are on the island.

This year’s campaign, “Pag Will Rock Your World”, shows all the reasons why Pag inspires and offers a unique experience. The island was stripped bare by the powerful wind of bura, and the play on the word “rock” indicates the significance of the rocks and stones. Whether it is the landscape, the charming streets or the incredible architecture of the town of Pag, stone still stands as a proud witness to the town’s rich past and an ally in the present.

Bikademy

Bikademy is a concept that, just like a formal academy, has students, studies, and exams. A Bikademy Student’s task is to choose a Study (region or city) and cycle to the Exams (locations within the Study). When they get to the Exam, they need to check in on the free Bikademy mobile application, after which they get a reward for visiting all of the Exams of a chosen Study.

Besides the town of Pag, this Study has six other Exams: Fortica, Kolansko polje, viewpoint Paška Vrata, the Old Town of Pag, the Šimuni, and Veliko Blato.

Krešimir Herceg, the owner of Bikademy, points out that cycling, as one of the most sustainable forms of transportation, ensures lower CO2 emissions and fewer crowds, and at the same time provides a chance for physical activity and has many health benefits. Bikademy’s mission is to motivate people to explore cultural and natural heritage by bicycle and, at the same time, promote destinations as desirable for cycle tourists.

“Bikademy is another opportunity to position the town and island of Pag as an ideal destination for active tourism and cycle tourists. With this partnership, we expect an increase in the number of cycle tourists and recreationists at lesser-known cultural and natural attractions of the town of Pag and its surroundings,” added Vesna Karavanić, director of the Pag Tourist Board.

This Study was made possible by the Pag Tourist Board, the Municipality of Kolan and the Municipality of Povljana, along with Bikademy’s partners, Enna Grupa and Giant Hrvatska, who provided the rewards.
