It was once the most important way of finding a place to stay on the Adriatic coast, but the ‘Zimmer Frei’ generation is now illegal in Makarska.

The end of a tourism era on the Makarska on August 22, 2015, reports HINA, as the most traditional and popular way of finding accommodation on the Adriatic coast is now illegal in the Dalmatian resort town of Makarska and its neighbouring rivieria.

Twelve signs like the one above have appeared at various points on the town’s main road, dissuading people from practising an established method of advertising available rooms, which are typically hand-held peices of paper with the words Zimmer Frei, Sobe and Rooms, offering passing motorists the opportunity to find a room. Before the arrival of Internet booking, this was a significant way for people to find accommodation.

No more, at least in Makarska, and the authorities’ decision to act is apparently two-fold – to clamp down on illegal renting of free rooms as well as taking steps to improve the image of the destination.
