May 11, 2018 – Visiting Šibenik? Here’s an idea for a day trip to an often overlooked island

The small island of Žirje located in the Šibenik archipelago isn’t waiting around for summer to liven up. The locals decided to team up and prepare a lovely event called Proljentura, the first edition of what might very well become an annual tradition.

Why should Žirje beam with good vibes only in summer months? With that thought in mind, the organisers pulled up their sleeves and got to work, to wake up the sleepy island from its winter slumber before the tourist season rolls around. As they stated, Proljentura will be a whole day of fun for kids, adults and those who consider themselves a combination of those two categories.

They are already planning to set aside a part of the revenue for a different project or goal each year. Funds raised at the first Proljentura will be invested in renovation of the local gusterna – an old water well that played an important role in the everyday life of the local community and remains a precious object bearing witness to the island’s historic development.

On May 19, the village of Žirje will host a lively fešta, best summed up with the good old ‘eat, drink and be merry’. Visitors will enjoy a splendid offer of delicious food and drinks, several bands and klapa groups will take care of the entertainment, and the organisers are also preparing games and competitions for both kids and adults, with a line of prizes to match.

How to get there?

There’s a ferry line maintained by Jadrolinija that’s departing at 11:30 from Šibenik – click here for more information.

If you want to get to the island earlier in the day, another line (ship Desto) is departing at 8:45 from Šibenik and returning from Žirje at 18:30.
