The European Capital of Culture 2020 is starting to make international headlines

The biggest city on Kvarner has been heating up recently: the European Capital of Culture 2020 was approved substantial EU funds for restoration of most prominent parts of cultural heritage. The first outlines of the project are slowly taking shape with the former Rikard Benčić factory opening its doors as the new museum of contemporary art in September, and the third largest Croatian city is starting to make international headlines.

The Guardian shines a spotlight on Rijeka with a profile piece of the city on August 29, 2017, presenting some highlights of local culture, gastronomy, and the entertainment scene. Dubbed a “shipbuilding port with indie attitude”, Rijeka gets a proper introduction as the “punkish, post-industrial” city of music that “also has a dazzling seafront”.

Locals selected for their respective areas of expertise come in with a few recommendations on what to do and see in Rijeka. Vlado Simcich Vava, guitarist with the legendary Croatian band Laufer, offers a couple of tips for those wishing to check out the music scene and the local clubs. Dušan Džimbeg, head chef at one of the most popular restaurants in the centre, is here to point you to the best gourmet checkpoints, ending with a nod to Rijeka’s largest open market where you can get fantastic fresh produce.

Artist Tomislav Brajnović pays homage to the prominent cultural locations, including theatres, museums, lively art-themed bars and the beloved art cinema; president of the conservation group ‘Šarolija’ Sandra Grozdanov shows some love for the natural gems around Rijeka, including the Gorski kotar natural reserve and the Blue World Institute of Research and Conservation on Lošinj island.

We’re heading for some welcome changes for the better in this town, and we can’t wait to see what the future has in store for Rijeka. Read the original article here!
