On 27 May, 2017, The Times released another of its popular series listing twenty top places to stay in Croatia and we weren’t surprised to find Hvar, seaside villas and lighthouses dominating the list.

Croatia is at it again, gaining international media attention, this time by The Times in the UK. We love it when others recognise just how fabulous and unique Croatia is as a holiday destination (it may sound a little biased always coming from us) – from picturesque seaside villas, to mini-galleries, lighthouses, log cabins and even a treehouse… Croatia has so much more to discover than most realise.

It was no surprise to see a list where half of the venues have seaside locations, five are renovated lighthouses and five come from the island of Hvar. We were particularly happy to see the gorgeous, quaint ‘White Villa’ on the Meneghello Palmizana Resort, standing deservedly at number two alongside luxury villas (worth a pretty penny). The White Villa is nestled in amongst a botanical garden, decorated with a variety of sculptures and artworks – giving it a mini-gallery, sort of feel. Compared to Hvar town, Sveti Klement, is a true Garden of Eden style retreat and has a reputation as a favoured spot for creatives and hippies at heart.

With the launch of Total Croatia Sailing, we thought we would focus on the coastal options, so here are a few of our picks from the list:

  • Lighthouse Sucuraj, Hvar
  • The White Villa, Sveti Klement
  • Lighthouse Korcula, Vela Sestrica
  • Villa Kamena, near Trogir
  • Villa Zaron, Primosten
  • Svilla, Drasnice (near Makarska)
  • Villa Capan, Lastovo
  • Lighthouse Marlera, near Liznjan
  • Villa Anna, Brac

Here is what they had to say about the first two, spanning the length of Hvar, from Sucuraj to Palmizana:

1 Lighthouse Sucuraj, Hvar
Built in 1889, this former lighthouse is now a charming four-bedroom villa on a rocky outcrop. It’s a tranquil spot, edged by sea on three sides, on the far eastern tip of the long, thin island of Hvar in the Dalmatian region. The rooms are plain, but there is a modern kitchen and a barbecue in a summerhouse in the garden. The lighthouse has its own mooring and it’s possible to rent boats. The town of Sucuraj is renowned for its fishing fleet, so there’s plenty of fresh seafood to be had.
Details From £215 a night, sleeping eight (holidaylettings.co.uk). Fly to Split

2 The White Villa, Sveti Klement
Sveti Klement is an island with amazing inlets off the western tip of Hvar, and the Palmizana estate comprises a cluster of colourful villas and bungalows in 300 hectares next to two pebbly beaches. The two-bedroom White Villa, one of the larger stone-built properties, is on a beach, with a private path to the shore. It’s full of art and has a terrace facing the bay. Each villa has a kitchen, but there are also two on-site restaurants.
Details From £356 a night for six (i-escape.com/palmizana). Fly to Split
