Vukovar-Srijem County Launches Unique Idea to Connect Croatia’s East with the Coast

A wonderful way to promote the flavors of Eastern Croatia along the bustling coastline.

Čvarci and kulen instead of English sausage and beans? Švargla instead of black pudding? Makovnjača instead of muffins? The ‘Srijem breakfast’ can be an integral part of the tourist offer throughout Croatia, and the guests of the new Heritage Hotel King Kresimir in the heart of Šibenik had a chance to enjoy the new gastronomic brand, which was launched by the Tourist Board of Vukovar-Srijem County, reports HRTurizam on September 3, 2018.

In the spirit of Srijem and Slavonian hospitality, the Tourist Board of Vukovar-Srijem County presented their finest delicacies to royally honor the people of Šibenik and their guests.

“The Srijem breakfast in Šibenik started from an initiative that Croatian products from Eastern Croatia should become an integral part of everyday offerings, especially in small and boutique hotels, focusing on eno-gastronomy and a top gourmet experience. In this way, guests broaden their horizons and meet the traditional gastronomy of all of Croatia, giving hotels added value and top quality products,” said Rujana Bušić Srpak, director of TZ Vukovar-Srijem County, adding that King Kresimir was not accidentally selected to serve the first Srijem breakfast on the coast.

For this occasion, the top delicacies came from local OPGs and from the delightful Hotel Danube, the proud owner of a Michelin recommendation. In addition to the Acin Šalas in Tordinci, the Aquarius restaurant in Bošnjaci, the Iločki Podrumi in Ilok, the Gondola Excursion in Sotina and Villa Lenije in Vinkovci, the Hotel Danube leads the ‘Taste of Srijem and Slavonia’ event, which can be enjoyed in October when the most delicious dishes can be tried at promotional prices.

“The average guest has tasted all of the international specialties, wines, and cocktails, but the reason they come to Croatia is to enjoy our local cuisine and that is why we are happy to support this initiative. Already in the first meeting we joined local products and designed a summer cocktail – we combined the homemade juice of elderberry and excellent rakija,” said Fabiano Baranović, Executive Director of King Kresimir.

“Our county is known for its attractive events throughout the year. If you did not come for the Ilok Grape Harvest at the end of August, which has been held for 51 years, the next opportunity is the Vinkovci Autumn. These events are brilliant – but not the only reason to visit us. The coast along the Danube from Vukovar to Ilok is a promenade of castles, museums, architectural ensembles, archeology and natural heritage, and this is confirmed by our EDEN title (European Destination of Excellence), awarded to Vukovar – Vučedol – Ilok in 2017 and 2018 for cultural tourism,” concluded Rujana Bušić Srpak.
