The Ice Frankovka from 2015 and the Graševina Miraz 2016 by the Slavonian winery Feravino have won bronze medals at the London International Wine Challenge. The IWC is, along with Decanter World Wine Awards, the most important global wine competition.
The Ice Frankovka is among the more exotic Croatian wines. When we tasted it last year in Feravino’s cellar in Feričanci, it presented an unusual bouquet composed of dried flowers, lots of red fruit, some honey and those unusual elements that sometime s appear in sweet wines. The Graševina Miraz belongs among elite Croatian Graševinas, with a pronounced rich aroma, solid body and lovely, oily texture. The IWC medals show that the process of repositioning Feravino, started several years ago, is mostly going in the right direction.
An important success was also made by the young Agris winery, with a 2016 Graševina which also won a bronze medal. This is the first time Agris registered at an international competition. Agris is a project by the successful Rijeka-Zagreb advertiser Boris Lešić, who built a winery in the west of Zagreb where he commercially processes Graševina and Malvazija. Lešić buys grapes from premium positions for both varieties: Malvazija from Santa Lucia and Graševina from Venje in Kutjevo, while wines are made by oenologist Leo Gracin and Vinolab, who established Feravino some dozen years ago as one of the more important continental wineries.
