July the 18th, 2025 – Zagreb is set to get brand new smart traffic lights and a new camera system for a price tag of 400,000 euros. This new technology will allegedly make it easier to catch traffic violations on the roads.
As Poslovni Dnevnik writes, the City of Zagreb is continuing to invest heavily in new traffic infrastructure with the aim of increasing traffic safety and efficiency across the capital. Following the recent public procurement for more traffic bollards and physical barriers in the city centre, a new project to modernise traffic signals at several locations has now been launched. The total value of the project stands at a hefty 400,000 euros, and it includes the replacement of traffic light devices with smart traffic lights, the installation of advanced sensors and cameras, and the modernisation of communication equipment, according to Bauštela.
Zagreb will as such replace traffic light systems, which no longer meet modern technical and safety standards, with smart traffic lights (new-generation modular devices). These ultra new systems enable operation in different modes, from coordinated and local, to time-controlled, to traffic-dependent. Owing to dual processor modules, they will also be significantly more resistant to technical issues. The introduction of these advanced systems will result in higher traffic flows, reduced congestion, and better adaptation to real road conditions.
This massive Zagreb project also includes a comprehensive modernisation of the traffic detection system. Various types of advanced video sensors and cameras will be installed at several city locations, which will enable more efficient traffic management, better flow analysis and greater safety for all road users.
In addition to vehicle detection sensors, automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) cameras will be installed, which will enable travel time monitoring and the quick identification of violators. The implementation of pedestrian and cyclist detection cameras, with automatic adjustment of the duration of the green light, as well as a system for distinguishing trams from other vehicles, is also planned. Panoramic and mobile PTZ cameras will be used for general intersection surveillance and recording violations such as running a red light.
All of these modern devices will be connected to Zagreb’s central traffic system and equipped with local data processing units. That in itself will relieve the main server and enable much faster responses to negative traffic situations in real time.
