August the 26th, 2023 – Zagreb University has been ranked among the top 500 in the world, according to a report from HRT.

As Poslovni Dnevnik writes, Zagreb University has long since been fairly well recognised on the global educational scene. It has now been ranked among a few hundred of the current best as it features on Shanghai’s list of the best universities in the world.

Marine engineering sees Zagreb university stand out

Universities across the planet are evaluated according to their specific fields, and Zagreb University received special recognition in the field of marine engineering, where it ranks an impressive 44th.

To make the scale of this success clearer, there are more than 30,000 universities all over the world, and only about two and a half thousand of them meet the criteria for the Shanghai ranking, which ranks the best thousand such educational facilities every year.

For years, Zagreb University unfortunately failed to enter the top 500 on the Shanghai list. It is interesting to note that the takeoff happened in the most difficult period the city has experienced in a long time – in the middle of the pandemic and the horrific earthquake of March 2020.

“There are different rankings that are set for certain types of universities. Shanghai is set to choose target universities for some of the highest paying groups internationally, and of course private universities dominate. There are some very bizarre criteria that need to be met, for example how many Nobel laureates you have. There are various lists, some are nationally coloured, and some are more economic”, said professor doctor Sven Seiwerth, vice dean of the Faculty of Medicine in Zagreb.

“Regardless of the fact that we’re small and not so well financed, we’re right there in the first league,” he added.

“Our faculty dominates in the field of marine engineering, especially the Department of Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering, which has 26 research staff. It’s a tradition of sorts for Zagreb University. Last year, we also ranked in 43rd place in that area, and the best result was, I think, back in 2018, when we came in 37th place. Our Institute always does very well because they’re productive and work very well,” said Professor Doctor Zdenko Tonković, Dean of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Shipbuilding in Zagreb.

“It’s become very difficult to break the perception and generally negative image of shipbuilding and shipyards in Croatia, that’s where we have a problem. We have no problem where we have scientific research. Our people are in demand, and there are no unemployed people when they finish their studies with us”, he concluded.
