At 170 centimetres tall, this pine tree growing out of the stone roof of the St. Peter and Paul church in Nerežišće on Brač Island is probably the most photographed item on the island after the famous Zlatni Rat beach.
In 1969 it was declared a monument of nature, as a rare tree specimen. The poor living conditions on the roof of the 600 year old church have limited its size. There is no evidence of roots going to the ground, so it is a small miracle the pine has survived on rainwater and sparse nutrients, especially in hot Mediterranean summers.
Official dating estimates it to be 120 years old, but the number cannot be certain.
