If visiting Rijeka, do climb the Trsat hill, where you will find the Trsatska Gradina fortress. Originating in ancient history as a lookout, it was bought in the first part of the 19th century by Austrian Field Marshal Count Laval Nugent who gave it today’s appearance and restored it as his family’s mausoleum.
Nearby is the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Trsat, one of the oldest in Croatia.
If you visit Rijeka in the warmer months, stop by for open air concerts.
