Claimed by some as the oldest town in all Croatia, Stari Grad (which means Old Town) on Hvar is 2399 today, and preparations have already started for the big celebration a year from now.
The town was founded by the Ancient Greeks in 384 BC, and they also settled on an 80 hectare agricultural colony nearby which is today known as the Stari Grad Plain, one of seven Croatian World Heritage Sites.
The town still retains plenty of its historic charm, with various other periods of fascinating history since the arrival of the Greeks, including the fortress home of famous Croatian poet Petar Hektorovic, known locally as Tvrdalj.
