Croatia is rich in UNESCO World Heritage Sites, but perhaps richer in buildings that surely deserve that status, but do not have.
Buildings such as Pula Arena in Istria, for example, the sixth largest Roman amphitheatre in the world, and one whose presence dominates the city’s waterfront.
In recent years, Pula Arena has been put to innovative use as a tourism facility, from an ice hockey venue to a music festival location.
Weekly Roman gladiator fights were introduced a couple of years ago, and they have proved to be both very authentic and extremely popular, one more example of Croatia mixing its rich heritage with the needs of modern tourism.
