Good news for fishing enthusiasts in Jelsa – a fishing shop, as described by resident blogger, Vivian Grisogono.

Tucked into a little shady alcove at the entrance to Jelsa’s central area, opposite the park and a few steps from the main car park, is a newly opened shop selling every possible bit and bob for recreational fishing (rekreacijski i sportski ribolov na moru). Owner Joško Burazin is passionate about fishing, and his stock is geared to veteran and novice fishermen alike. Apart from equipment for catching fish, there is an impressive range of diving gear, also useful accessories and gadgets which can serve practical needs even for people who don’t fish.

Joško has a lifetime’s knowledge and experience, and offers advice when appropriate, especially when it comes to explaining to customers the regulations governing recreational fishing in Croatia. For instance you should obtain a fishing permit (dozvola). These are available by the day, week, month or year from the Harbourmaster’s Office (Lučka kapetanija) which is situated just past one of Jelsa’s most popular restaurants, ‘Me and Mrs Jones’. As from July 15th 2011, it has also been possible to obtain permits via the Internet.

The little building in which the shop is situated is called ‘Lambik’, because it used to be a distillery for rakija. Previously it was a little grocery shop – and social corner – but the advent of numerous large supermarkets in the vicinity made it uneconomical. Joško’s long-term plans are to expand the fishing equipment business, and in the future he hopes to be able to offer boat trips for fishing and relaxation.

Although he has to use a van for transporting stock, Joško’s preferred mode of transport around Jelsa is by bicycle. To the side of the fishing shop is a large garden which serves as the base for renting out bicycles and mopeds / scooters. These are all properly maintained, and come with the legally required equipment such as helmets and third-party insurance in the case of the mopeds.
