I’ve often heard that Plavac smells of sardines… What a good Plavac Mali smells of to me is dark fruit, carob and dry figs. Such as this realistically unavailable wine by the Bire cellar.
Martina seems to think the fruit was more red during the visit to the winery in Korčula. Seems so tome too, but now it also seems to really smell of – sardines. It doesn’t give off any ethereal sensations as much as a good Plavac can, but nevertheless it is an excellent Korčula Plavac.
Korčula Plavac is special. While most people will resent the seemingly thinner body, a good Plavac from the “dark island of white wines” possesses a unique vitality. A more elegant performance with all the aroma splendour, instead of heaviness, instead of over ripeness or too much concentration…
This is wine joy (13.5%) of the sharpness of acids with a different structure of tannins, which are quite tiny, more fruity than meaty and less numerous.
Despite the chosen words, there is nothing mystical nor magical in Bire’s Plavac. It has the taste a Plavac should have. Too bad this is becoming harder to find at this level.
