Kamenice 2016 by Velimir Korak is the Best Plešivica Sauvignon we’ve Tasted

Total Croatia News

Updated on:

We love Plešivica sparkling wines, completely superior to all other Croatian sparklings. Almost equally we respect Plešivica Rieslings, the only ones in Croatia which encompass the larger part of an expressive register of that noble variety. Plešivica Chardonnays can be among the leading in the country, while Pinot Neros are so far interesting, sometimes successful attempts in the search for a local identity of the most demanding global red variety.

However, we have never had special respect for Plešivica Sauvignons. They always seemed somewhat inexpressive, which is not a good rating for an aromatic variety. Korak’s Sauvignon Kamenice 2016 is not only very expressive, but completely changes the perception of Plešivica Sauvignons. This excellent wine, nurtured in wooden barrels from 1938, of 3.000 litre capacity, shows that Plešivica can produce internationally valuable still wines.

Sauvignon Kamenice, unfiltered, is bursting with green aromas (grass, asparagus, green pepper), with a strong nuance of passion fruit and emphasised minerality. The phenomenal bouquet continues with a dense, mighty texture and vicious structure dominated but still slightly wild acids: it is a Sauvignon which can be aged for at least 5 to 8 years, still quite young today. Sauvignon Kamenice belongs among the biggest surprises of the Croatian wine industry this year. The Korak family deserves unconditional compliments for this wine.

We would like to have this dense, fresh and mineral Sauvignon with oysters, boletus or chestnut risotto, mullets, smelts and all types of cheeses (except blue). And especially with fresh olive oil.
