Darnekuša is an indigenous island variety, grown on Hvar and Vis islands, and used mainly for various coupages, including Proseccos. Around two months ago Hvar winemaker Antun Plančić spoke to us in the Esplanade hotel passionately of several types of Darnekuša: his Darnekuša wines from the first half of this decade have earned plenty of praise.
The day before yesterday we opened Plančić’s Darnekuša from 2015, with a white label, from the basic line of his family winery. The wine was quite a pleasant surprise. It is clear, fresh, with clearly pronounced herbal and fruit aromas and some pleasant spice elements in taste.
It is a red wine with enough freshness to be consumed even in the summer, something continually missing from Dalmatian winemaking. It is especially important that the wine is completely clear, without any unpleasant, unwanted or technically flawed scents, which are still too often felt in Dalmatian wine production. Plančić Darnekuša 2015 is a lovely, charming, easily drinkable wine with character. Such Dalmatian wines should be available more often in restaurants and shops.
