The Hungarians, it seems, appreciate more Nikola Zrinjski than we do. Marking the anniversary of the Siget battle under the name Miklós Zrínyi – Szigetvár 1566 memorial year they even organised a reviewof Zrinjski wine. Competing were around 80 labels from Hungary, Croatia and Slovenia, in white, rose and red categories. Several hundred bottles will be a special souvenir decorated with an appropriate mark. Croatian wines did well. Among the whites the best was a Green Silvanac 2013 from Orahovica with 87.25 points, while second with 87 points was Sauvignon 2015 No1 Bouquet Baranja by Pinkert winery. Among Croatian wineries Orahovica has devoted itself the most to Green Silvanac. The 2013 harvest produced a flaunting and finely refreshing wine with rich, almost Sauvignon-like fruit-flower aromas. Silvanac wines are best with light meals of neutral tastes, with the best coming from the Franačka region around the German town of Würzburg in the northwest of Bavaria. They are also recognisable by a flat bottle shape called bocksbeutel. The second-place Sauvignon Pinkert 2015 is actually Wine of the Week in the Wine Stars review. It’s a very likeable, sort recognisable wine that fits well with fish dishes with plenty of vegetables or seafood salads. Pinkerts also had the second-place rose wine. Their rose 2015 has a fine fruit scent and is best with light grill dishes or sipping during hot days.
The best rated rose was the Merlot Rose 2015 by Hungarian winery Danubiana. They produce nearly 14 million litres of wine per year, owned by Germans, exporting wine under different brands to Germany, Great Britain, Scandinavia, USA… Among the red wines the best was Vöros cuvée 2011 by the Ebner winery in the Siget area. Owner Andreas Ebner is from South Tirol (Alto Adige) in Italy so it is not suprising that most attention in the vineyard goes to Pinot Nero. However, at this review, his mix of red sorts was also the wine with the most points, 88.
