Punctuated in the middle of the gorgeous coastal drive between Split and Dubrovnik is the Peljesac Peninsula, whose entrance is guarded by the famous oysters, salt plains and 5km fortified wall of Ston, and whose western side is the gateway to Marco Polo’s Korcula, and the white wine treasures, Grk and Posip.
And while the famous traveller’s island may be famous for its whites, neighbouring Peljesac is the heartland of Dalmatia’s most famous re variety, Plavac Mali. Along with the impossibly steep slopes on the southern slopes of Hvar, the conditions for Plavac Mali on Peljesac are the best in the world, something which is reflected in the world class wines which are produced there.
Dalmatia is lagging behind Istria in its organisation of wine roads, but Peljesac is a little more progressive than some of its Dalmatian neighbours. Wine tasting invitations are signposted, and there is a Peljesac wine road of sorts, although it is missing some of the bigger names on the peninsula, such as Saint Hills in Oskorusno and Korta Katarina on the entrance to Orebic. TCW’s intention is to provide comprehensive information on all the wine roads of Croatia, but this will of course take time, and this wine road is at least a good starting point.
