Fireworks at Sherry’s

When arriving to a Terzolo wine tasting I had no idea I would hear something to think about for days, but first things first.

Terzolo winery is in Istria, precisely in Nova Vas porečka, presenting themselves with several excellent wines, done so by Roberto himself.

The Malvazija is a lovely, drinkable, rounded, somewhat atypical and yet straight off a Malvazija. There are many and all are more or less excellent, but also similar and don’t leave us breathless anymore. Maybe some changes are in order regarding the Malvazija’s.

The Teran is excellent, Teran the way I like it – not too strong, but not too soft. Splendid!

But folks, the Terzolo Merlot – now that’s a wine! The Merlot literally knocked me off my feet. Fantastic wine. Real old school Merlot, done by the book. Wonderful wine, rounded, excellent fragrance and wonderful aroma. When it fill your mouth, nothing jumps out – all is finely set. Yes, the Sheriff outdid himself there. The tapas served with he Merlot fantastically combined with he wine – together they gave each other a new dimension.

Thrilled by the wine I’m off to talk to the winemaker about previous harvests and his general outlook for this wine. Naturally, y thoughts wonder into archives and how they should be tated. As you can assume, the conversation went in a totaly different direction. Firstly, he’s not all into thinking about what the wine will look like in a few years. It needs to be tasted now, drink it and enjoy it and naturally, sell it. I must admit, strange approach for a winemaker so I asked him to clarify his position. And mind you! He says to me: “Wine is like fireworks.” I’ve heard a lot about wines, but not this. But Terzolo says: “Fireworks are enjoyed at that moment, truly, childishly… The same should be applied to wine.”
