Poy in Sherry’s

Total Croatia News

Updated on:

When the swallows return we know it’s springtime. Likewise, when wine presentations start on Tuesdays after summer, we know autumn has come.

Walking to Sherry’s this Tuesday, I pondered the tasting about to happen. Mladina is definitely not a winery to entice your imagination as it is a huge one – and when thoughts go in that direction, don’t expect much from that story.

Still, the opening line of our hostess made me think and she said the following: “Mister Brkić will present Mladina cellar wines, which sell great.” It was this fact that made me think. When going to tastings, at least for us wine world professionals, it’s usually wines of superior category and financially unreachable by many citizens. Yes, it is a sad truth, wines of lower price are being consumed. Regarding that, the Poy champagne is cheaper than many Italian prosecco’s on our market and often of higher quality.

When you start thinking that way and then the Sheriff serves fantastic tapas with wines, you come to realize that Mladina wines are not bad at all and that their point is to be financially reachable to most. So thumbs up for this tasting, as we have been spoiled enough with tastings of different wine greats whom we often can’t afford. I’ve learned that when ordering a glass of cheaper Italian prosecco, it might be better to order a glass of Poy.

We won’t talk much of the tapas, as the Sheriff has become a real magician. His choice of ingredients is excellent and presented quite well. The evening’s surprise was a brittle dough pie with cocoa, sour cherries, pistachios and white chocolate. The author of this excellent delicacy is the Evil Ladle, known as the Gastro Sadist, in fact Nevena Opačić. We agree with the Sherry team she is the future star on the pastry skyline of Croatia.

And this was the tasting menu:

Sauvignon Selected, 2013 harvest
– tapas: Gligora cheese, anchovies, fried olive, olive oil

Poy Selected, champagne
– three cheeses: Primorac, Drniš and Težački, fig jam and grapes

Poy Selected Rose, champagne
brittle dough pie with cocoa, sour cherries, pistachios and white chocolate

In the end, it needs to be said the evening surpassed all expectations, which is quite important in these gloomy times. I feel the need to thank Sherry’s and Mladina for leading me into realistic thinking. The wine world does not need another snob.

Cheers, with Poy!
