The Legacy of Margaret Thatcher in Samobor

Wondering what Margaret Thatcher has to do with Samobor? Plenty! Few people know that the Iron Lady is very responsible for our ability to enjoy ice cream today.

Margaret Thatcher was a chemist and before entering politics she worked in her field. She and her team found a way to pump air into the ice cream mixture and gave ice cream the needed fluffiness, creaminess and all that ice cream is today.

This life tidbit came to me in Samobor during a visit to the new cake shop on Samobor’s main square named Sweet Factory Medenko. Here you can try unusual ice creams. Notably, black tea, beat root, brown sugar, blue cheese and other ice creams. In this factory of sweets even chocolate ice cream is something else – something you’ve probably never tried. Naturally, the main difference between these ice creams and others lies in the fact that these are homemade. Maybe we can’t say “the way grandma used to make them”, but Thatcher surely did.

What brings me great joy is the openness of owner Ivana Baković to new ideas. When I first tasted her chocolate ice cream, I immediately covered it with olive oil, as this a pure hedonistic combination. Ivana didn’t wonder for long – she tasted and her next question was where to get the oil and which one. You can try homemade pies in her store along with other delicacies. If you’re heading to Samobor for the renown Bermet, you’ll be glad to know they have a chocobermet ice cream so stop by.

Considering they just opened, things are still rough on the edges but soon to follow is a long G.E.T. reportage from Medenko Sweet Factory.
