Exporting Wine to China – Do We or Don’t We Have Enough Wine???

Total Croatia News

Do we have enough wine to export to China? Many of our winemakers say we don’t.

The Chinese market is the fastest growing in the world, with a yearly jump of 15%. Today there are around 20 million consumers, with an estimate of 80 million by 2020.

How will a small Croatia compete in this market?

Some say: “It won’t.”

We at the G.E.T. Report disagree. We claim Croatian winemakers can compete, but not with numbers we don’t have, but with the quality we do. We should export few wines with superior quality.

We already know the people from Badel agree, and as s apparent, so do those in PP Orahovica. The latter just sent their Frankovka wine to China.

And this is no test sample which, if accepted, gather the necessary numbers to cover the next order to fill shelves of Chinese markets.

PP Orahovica is continually exporting to China for over two years. This time they’re exporting a container with 13.000 bottles of Frankovka. It’s a 2012 harvest, with 12.9% alcohol, a characteristically red ruby color, a developed red fruit aroma, especially sour cherry. After a year of aging, one of the best continental wines is ready for the Chinese market.

Along with Frankovka, the Green Silvanac and Sauvignon are also exported.

The 2011 Frankovka won a bronze medal at the “Decanter Asia wine award 2012”, which was one of the tickets to enter the Chinese market. In the same year, the 2009 Green Silvanac won the best white dry wine award at the INTERWINE judging in Guangzhou, China. After these awards their export numbers saw a significant rise.

The Chinese market consumes more and more quality and superior wines, mostly wines made in Europe. The most sought are red sorts and white semi sec do sweet wines.
