Croatia allegated its draft refugee quota by European Commission.
The new draft proposal of the European Commission for the allocation of 120.000 migrants and refugees from Greece, Hungary and Italy includes a provision that Croatia should accommodate 1,064 migrants. According to the draft document of the European Commission, Croatia should take over 138 refugees from Italy, 447 from Greece and 479 from Hungary. In total, that amounts to 1,064 migrants, which is much smaller number than the figure of about three thousand migrants which has been circulating in the media in recent days, reports Jutarnji List on September 6, 2015.
The Commission should present its proposal in the next few days. It is still in the draft phase, so the final version may look different. However, according to this draft, Croatia should receive 0.89 percent of the number of migrants in the three countries which are faced with the largest refugee burden.
The Commission has used four criteria for distribution of migrants – population, the GDP, the average number of asylum seekers per million inhabitants in the period 2010-2014, and the unemployment rate. The largest number of refugees should be accommodated by Germany, which is to receive just over 26 percent of the 120,000 migrants and refugees, followed by France with 20.3 percent.
In July, Croatia has made a decision to take over 550 people from about 40,000 migrants who are in Italy and Greece. That was the first allocation of immigrants to ease the burden felt by Greece and Italy, which at that time were the most exposed to the inflow of migrants from the Middle East and North Africa. Now they have been joined by Hungary, after the arrival routes have been changed and the migrants have started to increasingly come into the EU via the Western Balkans route. The EU member states have not yet reached the final agreement on the distribution of these first 40,000 refugees.
