July 9, 2023 – Things are hotting up with a stronger heat wave starting tomorrow, reports Index.hr.
The second heat wave of the year is just around the corner. What can already be said is that it should be stronger than the first one, with temperatures that should go up to 40 degrees. It won’t be long inland, but it will stay a bit longer in the Adriatic.
It’s sunny and hot today. The wind inland is mostly weak, and on the Adriatic in the morning, it is gusty, then weak and moderate southwesterly and northwesterly. The highest daily air temperature today is mostly between 29 and 34 degrees Celsius. Tomorrow it will grow even more.
Temperatures will reach 35 degrees tomorrow. It will be sunny, quite clear in places and very hot during the day. The inland wind will be weak. In the Adriatic, a bura will blow at night and in the morning, then a moderate southwesterly, and a northwesterly on the open sea. The lowest morning air temperature is mostly from 14 to 19, on the Adriatic from 22 to 25 °C, and the highest daily temperature is mostly between 30 and 35 °C.
A heat wave could have a negative effect on health, especially for elderly and sensitive people and children. It will be sunny, the nights warm and very warm, and the days hot and very hot, which will be especially pronounced in the middle of the week. On Wednesday, the mood on the Adriatic will be spoiled by the strengthening of the south.
In the second part of the week, the high heat will remain mostly in the southern part of the Adriatic.
Heat wave warning
The State Hydrometeorological Institute has issued a heat wave warning. Already tomorrow, an orange warning for dangerous weather has been issued for two regions, Karlovac and Rijeka. A yellow warning has been issued for the rest of the country.
For Tuesday, an orange warning was declared for Zagreb’s Karlovac, Gospić and Dubrovnik regions, while a red warning was issued for the Rijeka area due to the heat, which is the highest level of warning and represents “very high danger”. A yellow warning applies to the Osijek, Knin and Split areas.
An orange warning has been issued for the entire country on Wednesday.
For Thursday, a red warning was declared for the Dubrovnik region, an orange one for Split, and the rest of Croatia is in yellow.
Warnings and instructions from the directorate for civil protection
The Directorate of Civil Protection published on Sunday, on the eve of the heat wave announced for next week, a warning and instructions to avoid health problems, such as exhaustion and worsening of cardiovascular, respiratory, kidney or mental diseases.
In order to prevent dehydration, it is recommended to drink enough liquid, non-carbonated water and low-calorie drinks without caffeine, alcohol and sugar.
Staying in direct sunlight between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. should be avoided, especially by children, pregnant women, the elderly, heart patients and patients with chronic diseases.
People who work outdoors should rest more often, stay in the shade and drink fluids every 30 minutes.
It is good to wear light, light clothes made of natural materials and to protect your head from direct sunlight.
The living space should be cooled using the cooler night air, during the day the windows should be closed and the blinds lowered, especially those facing the sun, and as many electrical devices in the home should be turned off as possible.
It is advised to avoid going out in the hottest part of the day and strenuous physical work, which should be done in the coldest part of the day, which is usually in the early morning hours.
You should regularly use products with a protective factor against harmful UV radiation, use the highest factor for newborns and small children, and it is good to dress them in light clothes that also protect them from UV radiation.
It is particularly dangerous to leave children or animals in a parked vehicle.
Given that increased traffic is expected on city roads and bypasses and highways, as well as occasional stoppages, it is advisable to avoid traveling in the hottest part of the day.
You should take water with you on the trip, and it is important to drink fluids constantly, not just when you feel thirsty. Set the refrigerator to a temperature seven degrees Celsius lower than the outside temperature.
