September the 16th, 2026 – Croatia is set to get its most modern and largest thermal spa as a historic 42 million euro project finally nears completion.
Works on Wellovar in Veliki Korenovo, the largest construction project in the history of Bjelovar worth €42 million, have entered the final stage. Poslovni reports that the enormous complex with a total of ten pools is already taking on its final appearance, and finishing works and system checks are currently underway before opening. Bjelovar Mayor Dario Hrebak regularly visits the construction site and emphasises that the focus is now on the details and on balancing and calibrating one of the most complex and modern heating, cooling and hot water systems in Croatia.
“Works on the largest thermal spa in Croatia, our Wellovar, are nearing completion. Only minor details remain, but this is one of the most complex and modern heating, cooling and hot water systems in Croatia. We now have to ensure that the entire system is balanced and calibrated. It is hard to say when we will open the doors. Our great wish is that it will be on the 29th of September, on the Bjelovar City Day, but it is very difficult to predict,” said Hrebak. He added that at this moment the exact opening date is not crucial; the most important thing is that the project is completed to a high standard.
“What matters is that everything we see is heading towards its final stage and that the people of Bjelovar will get a standard that 95 percent of other cities in Croatia do not have. Croatia will also get an excellent centre for the development of water sports,” he stressed. In addition to tourist and recreational facilities, Wellovar is also expected to play an important role in the development of sport. According to Hrebak, the facility has been designed to meet the standards for hosting national and international swimming and water polo competitions. “We are truly looking forward to it soon opening its doors and delighting our citizens, as well as all tourists and visitors with its facilities,” Hrebak concluded.
With the completion of this massive €42 million project, Bjelovar is set to gain a major new sports, recreational and tourist complex. Although the official opening date has not yet been confirmed, the city administration’s wish is for Wellovar to welcome its first visitors as early as the 19th of September, on Bjelovar’s City Day.
