The Croatian National Theatre (Hrvatsko narodno kazalište Split – HNK Split) is working in unison with the town of Hvar, organizing a series of events in Hvar on May 27th and 28th, as well as a final event on June 4th. For the event titled “Dani HNK Split u Hvaru” (Days of HNK in Hvar), the town of Hvar will be serving its guests, locals, and tourists with a cultural treat to kick off the summer season. Set in unique theatrical history, you won’t want to miss this!
The events on the 27th and 28th of May will both be held at the open-air theatre Veneranda on Hvar, originally a convent turned fortress from the 16th century on. On the 27th, Čudo u Poskokovoj Dragi (Miracle in Poskokova Draga, an imaginary village) a hit-comedy written by Ante Tomić and directed by Mario Kovač, will be performing, and during their showing in Split they saw over 15,000 spectators! A bestselling writer and one of the most entertaining of Croatian prose writers, Tomić has come to life on stage. A hilarious story of a family made up of an authoritarian father with four sons lost in the wilderness of the Dalmatian hinterland (Zagora) proved to be an extremely witty stage template for a great comedy. Through the story, the oldest son has grown tired of his father’s terror and dirty laundry, and decides to change his life around and get married. From that moment on in the macho world of the Poskok family, time is measured by the Gregorian calendar. The sudden occurrence of women entering this male family dynamic creates drastic changes, but also creates a framework for a reckless comedy.
The following day on the 28th of May, the Split Ballet will perform Boléro and Carmen, both choreographed and directed by Valentina Turcu, ballet champion and choreographer for the Slovenian National Theatre in Maribor. Turcu is also one of the most highly acclaimed names in the choreographic scene of this region. Boléro is a one-movement orchestral piece by the French composer Maurice Ravel. Originally composed as a ballet, it is one of the most performed and best-known compositions. Carmen, related to the Spanish climate and boiling hot gypsy blood, is the ultimate act opera by Georges Bizet. Russian composer Rodion Shchedrin’s music adapted for the ballet and for his wife, Maja Plisecki, created a one-act dance suite. This team of authors helped to make Carmen stand out in the name of costume with designs by Michal Negrin, an Israeli designer whose creations are worn by the biggest acts in entertainment. We’re lucky to see the Split ballerinas and ballet dancers have the privilege to wear her costumes, which have debuted in the field of theatrical costume design.
Split’s very own string quartet will be performing the works of Boris Papandopulo and Antonín Dvořák for the final event on June 4th in front of the Hvar Gradska loggia, holding a free concert for the citizens and guests of the island.
