In Croatia, everybody wants to work for government.
Almost 1,400 applications have been received by Croatian Parliament for its public competition for admission of nine civil servants. It is expected that the best ranked candidates will start working by the end of October, reports Večernji List on October 1, 2016.
Parliament advertised that it was looking for two advisors in the Office of the Parliamentary Secretary, an advisor for the official web page, an associate in the Media Department, an associate and an administrative secretary in the Citizen Services Department, advisor in the Parliamentary Library, a senior archival technician in the General Services Department, and an adviser in the Protocol Office.
The fact that there are as many as 1,386 applications demonstrates that there is an exceptional interest in working in Parliament. Each open position has received 154 applications on average. Most of them have applied for the position of an associate in the Citizen Services Department, which requires a university degree, one year of work experience, knowledge of English language and ability to work on a personal computer.
Asked when the nine “chosen ones” could start working, Parliament said that, “depending on the outcome of the public competition, it is expected that the candidates who will have achieved the best results in the testing procedure could start working by the end of October”.
Parliament also explained why it decided to hire nine new employees. The previous competition was announced in December 2012. Since them, Parliament has lost 26 employees due to retirements and people leaving for other jobs. In addition, by the end of this year nine current employees will be retiring or will otherwise leave Parliament.
Therefore, the competition was announced in order to ensure the continuity of services which need to be provided to members of Parliament and citizens. The competition has been announced according to the Plan of Admission to the Civil Service in 2016, which has been determined and published in accordance with the law and with the approval of the Ministry of Finance.
