Good news for Kvarner: a proposal for EU funding has been approved for the project titled “Riviera4season2”, Novi list reports.
Part of the programme “Interred V A Slovenia-Croatia”, the project placed first on the list of 11 approved proposals in the cultural heritage section, and will be implemented for two destinations, Portorož and Opatija riviera.
“The subject of the proposal we submitted a year ago is the active protection of local heritage through sustainable development of tourism in Opatija, Piran and their surroundings, with the aim of expanding the cultural and the tourist offer. In this area, we’re focusing on revitalising Volosko and Dobreć. In other words, we’ll be doing the research required to create quality future activities”, stated Mayor of Opatija Ivo Dujmić. He added the project will also aim to preserve the natural resources of Opatija hinterland, as well as valorise historical persons important for the area, such as Dr Andrija Mohorovičić.
Director of the Opatija Tourist Board Suzi Petričić said the goal of the project is to work on the appeal of both destinations by creating innovative cultural events and improving the existing traditional manifestations, so they can become the main reason for guests to visit the riviera. “By creating an attractive gastronomic and cultural event in Volosko, as well as further developing the Marunada (gastro manifestation in the season of chestnut harvest) in Dobreć, we’ll shape valuable tourist products that will be promoted abroad”, said Petričić.
Dean of the Faculty of Tourism and Hospitality Management Dr Dora Smolčić Jurdana pointed to the existing pressure in the littoral area of Opatija and its surroundings, which might present a problem in sustainable development of tourism further down the line. “The project presents us with the challenge of revitalising the cultural heritage of the rural area around Portorož and Opatija. The cooperation between the public and the private sectors in tourism will lead to opening new ‘green’ job opportunities in rural areas.” she stated.
The City of Opatija and the Opatija Tourist Board will be granted funding amounting to 300.000 euro.
