One of the most popular Croatian writers of all time, Marija Jurić Zagorka, will be getting her own museum over the course of the next year and a half, prvi.hr reported earlier today.
The Jelačić Palace at Zagreb’s St. Mark’s Square, which will undergo a thorough renovation process so it could house the exhibition on the fascinating life of our great writer, will house the future museum.
“The palace dates back to the same era in which Zagorka’s novels take place, which is one of the reasons it was chosen as its location. When I was a student, there was no mention of Marija Jurić Zagorka in our textbooks, but she has become part of the Croatian canon in the past 10-15 years,” said Slobodan Prosperov Novak, Croatian literature historian, comparativist and theatrologis, who has participated in the project.
“The concept of exhibits on display will be similar to world’s most famous houses dedicated to writers and the museum will be both a cultural and a touristic project,” Mayor Bandić said.
The project has been in the works for the past nine years and, according to its feasibility study, around 250,000 visitors will visit it every year, Vinko Grubišić, one of the people involved into the project’s implementation, added.
“The museum could be similar to the Museum of Torture, but emphasis will be put on Zagorka and the Witch of Grič, and it will include authentic pieces of Zagorka’s writing, as well as torture devices,” Mr. Grubišić concluded.
