Border Scandal with Slovenia Will Not Affect Cooperation with Slovenia in Tourism

The important Slovenian tourism market will be unaffected by the current border dispute, according to the Croatian Minister of Tourism, Darko Lorencin.

Tourism Minister Darko Lorencin said that the arbitration dispute between Croatia and Slovenia due to the border scandal will not affect the cooperation between the two countries in the field of tourism, according to a report in Poslovni.hr on July 31, 2015.

“This is an isolated case. In the tourism sector, we have excellent cooperation with the Slovenian Ministry of Economy. We and Slovenia jointly approach several of the more distant markets and we advertise ourselves almost as a single destination. We are also currently discussing some other markets where we could possible work together”, said Lorencin. “We have to jointly develop our tourism industries, especially when it comes to distant destinations.”

The Croatian government on Thursday launched a procedure for termination of the arbitration agreement between the Croatian and Slovenian governments because of the violation of the agreement by Slovenia. Government made the decision after the Croatian Parliament unanimously supported a proposal to initiate proceedings to exit the arbitration agreement on the settlement of the border dispute with Slovenia.

In tourism, Croatia and Slovenia have for several years jointly approached foreign markets under the slogan “Experience Croatia, Feel Slovenia”.

Slovenian tourists are among the most numerous of the Croatian coast. Last year, they were in second place by their share of overnight stays. According to the Croatian Bureau of Statistics, Croatia was last year visited by slightly more than 1.1 million Slovenian tourists, generating a total of 6.2 million overnight stays, which is respectively an increase of 3.3 per cent and 1.3 percent compared to the year before.

The growth has continued this year as well, and the data from the Croatian National Tourist Board for the first six months show that the number of Slovenian tourists has increased by 9.2 percent compared to the first half of last year.
