More Broken Records: Split Records its Highest Sea Temperature Ever

Since the beginning of August, one of the most intense thermal waves since the beginning of official meteorological measurements (some 150 years ago) hit Dalmatia.

The intensity of the actual heat wave is evidenced by the fact that a number of absolute temperature records have been demolished over the last ten days across certain locations, and a record number of days has been recorded at temperatures above 35°C. Notably, Knin and a few other locations recorded temperatures above an extreme 40°C, reports Dalmacija Danas on August 10, 2017.

On Thursday, August 9, 2017, the highest ever sea temperature was recorded for Split – reaching 28.9°C at 14:00! The previous record temperature measured 28.7°C on July 31, 2017. It is also important to note that sea temperature measurements in Split have been conducted since 1958.

In other recording breaking news, Knin has now set a new temperature record, measuring 42.0°C at 14:00 yesterday.

At 12:00, 41°C was measured in Milna on Brač and Strožanc, and 40°C in the hinterland of Omiš, Solin, and Žrnovnica.

Temperatures are also very high at night, and somewhere around 30°C. A perfect example would be Komiža on the island of Vis who recorded the highest minimum air temperature ever measured in Croatia.

The minimum temperature in Komiža last night was around 32.3°C. At 22:00, the temperature was 34.8°C and at 05:00 in the morning it was 33.4°C. According to the data received, the temperature of 32.3°C could be a record high value for the minimum high temperature ever measured in Croatia. The hot night in Komiza was followed by a day that recorded 37.9°C. Komiža’s absolute temperature record of 38.8°C was recorded on July 24, 2017. On that day, the minimum temperature was 28.2°C

The former record holder of the minimum high temperature recorded 30.8°C in Dubrovnik on July 1, 1994.

Record minimum temperatures of at least 30°C were also measured in:

Split: 30.0°C, July 6, 1988,

Makarska: 30.4°C, July 24, 2007

Senj: 30.7°C July 22, 2015; 30.3°C, July 17, 2010
