The Velika Gospa celebration, which took place in Sinj on August 15th, is difficult to describe through words and photographs.
This year’s Assumption of Mary saw tens of thousands of believers gather on the eve of the feast, with their hearts in their palms, asking the Mother of God to hear their prayers and hopes – for her motherly embrace to comfort the most exhilarating of souls.
Pilgrims arrived from all over the world on the eve of the Assumption, setting foot overnight from Dugopolje to Sinj. Once the pilgrimage arrived in Sinj, every fatigued, hungry, and thirsty pilgrim would fall to their knees, with their vows, and bow to the altar in front of the image of the Miraculous Lady of Sinj.
On August 14th, a vigil was held in the crowded Franjo Tudjman Square in Sinj by Monsignor Vlado Košić, a Sisak bishop. In Our Lady’s town, there was an all-night prayer organized in the Votive Church. On the feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary on August 15th, the mass celebration was held in the Church of the Miraculous Lady of Sinj which began at 4 am, and at 9:30, the noise of trumpets and fanfare marked the beginning of the procession with Our Lady’s image.
An abundance of crowds followed their heavenly patron in the streets of Sinj with prayer and song. Archbishop of Split – Makarska Monsinjor Marin Barišić presided over Franjo Tuđman Square after the procession with a message of celebration. The evening mass at 18:00 was led by the provincial Franciscan Province of the Blessed Sacrament Fr. Joško Kodžoman at Franjo Tuđman Square.
On August 15th, Sinj celebrated the day of their city.
