A couple of days of snow, a weekend of floods – is it time for spring yet?
We haven’t even managed to catch a break from reporting about the latest cold wave and massive quantities of snow recorded all over the country, and another weather phenomenon is already coming our way. Several cities in Dalmatia were flooded by high tide earlier today, reports Dalmacija danas on March 3, 2018.
Owing to a cyclone which passed over the Adriatic on Friday, low pressure weather combined with western winds playing up in the evening hours resulted in a storm surge. The so-called plima isn’t a rare occasion in some parts of the Dalmatian coast; for example, several towns on Hvar island have a lot of experience with storm tides flooding their waterfronts, streets and business venues.
The latest tidal peak flooded the centre of Stari Grad on Hvar, causing substantial issues for the local population:

Let’s not forget the last major flood in Stari Grad which hit the town in July 2017 as the worst recorded tidal wave since 2003:

The city of Trogir was also affected this time; here’s a video taken on Friday afternoon, showing the sea level on the brink of overflowing the local riva:

Apart from Stari Grad and Trogir, the surge affected the city of Omiš, along with several other coastal and island towns.
