ZAGREB, April 24, 2018 – A FRONTEX training course of EU border police began in Valbandon on Monday as part of the “EBCGT – Land Border Surveillance Officer Training” programme, the Interior Ministry (MUP) has reported.
Due to a large influx of migrants from Asia to the eastern Mediterranean, police officers from EU countries are engaged on a daily basis in the protection of the EU’s external borders at sea and operations to rescue migrants.
For two years police officers from EU countries have undergone intensive training at FONTEX’s partner academy – the Zagreb Police Academy and in Valbandon, Istria, MUP reported on its web site.
The Valbandon course, the first of four FRONTEX training courses for the year, will include workshops based on scenarios of handling of asylum seekers by border police. The training course is being conducted by trainers from Germany, Poland, Greece, Finland, Romania and Croatia, and attending are 18 police officers from Malta, Portugal, Austria, Lithuania, Romania, Germany, Estonia, Italy, Finland, Bulgaria, Slovakia, the Czech Republic and Croatia.
FRONTEX can provide EU member states faced with serious migrant pressure with additional technical and financial support as well as contribute to expert training, it was said at the opening of the course. The main objective of the FRONTEX project is more efficient communication and exchange of the best police practice in EU member states, MUP said.
