ZAGREB, May 10, 2018 – German Chancellor Angela Merkel said on Wednesday evening, ahead of a working meeting with members of the Bosnia and Herzegovina Presidency in Berlin, that she was concerned about a crisis caused by the election legislation in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Some of the regulations of the current election legislation in BiH were abolished by the national Constitutional Court which in 2016 said the regulations in question were not in accordance with the Constitution which defines the indirect election of members of the House of People in the Parliament of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
We need an urgent election system reform. We are worried about the fact that this has not been possible so far, notably now when the election date has been set, Merkel said.
General elections in Bosnia are scheduled for 7 October, despite the fact that there is still no agreement on amendments to the election legislation.
Merkel stressed Germany continued to support Bosnia and Herzegovina’s European prospects.
