Though he put up an incredible fight, Borna Ćorić was unable to repeat his success from the semi-final against Federer and failed to win his first Masters 1000 title. 

In the Shanghai Masters final on Sunday, Borna Ćorić was unable to upset his mentor, Novak Djoković. After almost 100 minutes of play, the Serbian tennis star defeated Ćorić 6:3, 6:4 for his fourth Shanghai title and his 32nd final of a Masters 1000 series tournament, reports Gol.hr on October 14, 2018. 

Ćorić played in the final on the ATP tour for the fifth time in his career, though this was the first time he fought for the Masters 1000 series trophy. Djoković, on the other hand, played his 46th final at this level and has played a total of 103 finals in his career – and yes, he’s won 72 titles. Interestingly, this is Djokovic’s 11th final in China where he also has a perfect record of 11:0. 

In Djokovic’s third victory over Ćorić in the same number of matches, a break was enough to defeat the Croat in each set. In the first set, Djokovic broke Ćorić at a 4:2 lead and, without any problems, retained his advantage. Djokovic lost only four points in the first set of the match from the first strike. 

In the second set, the Serbian tennis player reached the break already in the first game. Ćorić’s only chance for a break was in the sixth game, though his forehand missed. In the ninth game, Ćorić once again showed his fighting spirit when it was 0:40 with three consecutive match points for Djokovic, who had to conclude the duel with his service. Despite the missed opportunity in the previous game, Djokovic kept calm and held his concentration to defeat Ćorić after 96 minutes.

Thanks to the win in Shanghai, Novak Djoković will now be named No. 2 on the ATP ranking and skip Roger Federer. Djokovic will now be just 215 points behind Rafael Nadal.

The phenomenal Borna Ćorić has collected 600 points by reaching the Shanghai final and will reach his best career ranking on Monday as the 13th best tennis player in the world.
