Varaždin Joins Climathon, 24-hour Hackathon Dedicated to Solving Climate Challenges

Daniela Rogulj

Because the negative impact of climate change today is visible to everyone, Varaždin has decided to participate in the city’s first ever ‘Climathon’.

The city of Varaždin will be included in the Climathon project for the first time as one of the hundreds of cities participating around the world. Therefore, on October 26th, Varaždin will join a 24-hour ‘hackathon’ dedicated to solving the climate challenges in the city. All participating cities within the Climathon will have one goal – to mitigate climate change, reports Lokalni.Vecernji List on October 23, 2018.

The project was presented by Deputy Mayor, Zlatan Avar, Dr. Aleksandra Anić-Vučinić, associate professor at the Faculty of Geotechnical Engineering in Varaždin and representative of the organizers of the global Climathon movement, and Karlo Kukec, Director of the Technology Park.

The city of Varaždin has supported such ideas over the years, said Mr. Avar, and added that the Technology Park also included a symbolic award – one month of mentoring to the best participant.

Varaždin is already making positives movements to fight climate change.

“The negative impact of climate change is visible to everyone today,” Avar added and pointed out that the city has a furnace room project which reduces the impact on the climate by lowering carbon dioxide emissions.

“At the Climathon, besides students and professionals involved in this area alone, businesses and citizens who have good entrepreneurial ideas that can turn into a successful business will be included. We want to make the public aware of this issue that affects us all and is essential for the development of the city, county, and the state in the end, and alert citizens that we are not alone and that our environmental behavior has a global impact,” Avar said.

The Climathon will take place in 115 cities around the world on October 26th.

The Climathon will begin on October 26 at the Faculty of Geotechnics, organized by the Climate Consortium KIC Hub Croatia – Geotechnical Faculty of Varaždin, the Green Energy Cooperative, Terra Hub, Impact Hub Zagreb and Knowledge Network, with the support of the City of Varaždin.

At the same time, the Climathon will take place in 115 cities all over the world, will last for 24 hours and finish at the Herzer Palace on October 27 at 3 pm with a public presentation of the team solutions who, in those 24 hours, will “hack” the problems in their city through creative workshops.

Varaždin will tackle the issue of waste management.

The three best teams will even win prizes – which is a great promotion for Varaždin who is also competing for the Young Capital of the Year 2021. Under the climate change theme, the competitors in Varaždin will address the issue of waste management because it is challenging to improve the separation of collected waste and increase the volume of material circulating in the local economy.

“We want to improve the management of waste textiles, plastics and other materials for the more efficient circulation of waste materials as resources for the city and citizen,” it was clarified.

All students, researchers, designers, developers, and entrepreneurs who will work with mentors on innovative and creative solutions for Varaždin are invited to participate.

The Climathon is free.
