In addition to the existing seasonal catamarans to Brač, Hvar, Korčula, Mljet, and Dubrovnik, from 1 April 2019, Split should also sail to Šibenik and Zadar on a new semi-annual line.
As Slobodna Dalmacija finds out on December 28, 2018, this connection would be maintained by the Šibenik company “Envira”, founded in July last year, behind the Norwegian company Vidar Hop Rederier. If the State Agency for Coastal Maritime Traffic ultimately confirms the route, it will be maintained “without the obligation of public service“, meaning that the shipowner cannot apply for a state subsidy, but can independently create specific terms.
The company plans to sail from Split to Šibenik and Zadar daily from 1 April to 31 October next year. The catamaran would sail from the Split City Port for Šibenik at 9 am, leaving from Šibenik at 10:35 am, and arrive at the Zadar harbor at 12:40. The route would sail from Zadar to Šibenik at 5:30 pm, and from Šibenik to Split at 7:35 pm, with the expected arrival in Split at 9:10 pm.
According to the published price list, a ticket on the longest route from Split to Zadar or vice versa will cost about 158 kuna, while from Split to Šibenik and from Šibenik to Zadar it would cost 110 kuna.
While these prices will undoubtedly be higher than the costs of bus tickets on the same routes, the pull for the Norwegian and Šibenik company will surely be the speedy arrival to the destination, far fewer stops, and an unforgettable sailing experience to Northern Dalmatia.
Introducing this seasonal line linking the Dalmatian capital with the two neighboring County centers represents somewhat of a return of the direct routes between these three ports that traveled 120 years ago.
