While you might immediately think of Italy when you think of pizza, it’s no secret that the Croats adore pizza and are a dab hand at making it. The Croatian market has potential, at least according to Mihael Sviben of All about pizza, who will facilitate the entrance of Domino’s Pizza in Croatia.
As Marta Duic/Poslovni Dnevnik writes on the 13th of February, 2020, Domino’s Pizza, which is known as the world’s largest pizza company, is opening its first branch in Croatia this spring. The arrival of this ”world leader” of pizza in more than 16,300 outlets across more than 85 countries is credited to All about pizza, ie Michael Sviben and his business partner Nils David Gornall.
”We started this story a little over a year ago, and we’re working with an investor who already has Domino’s Pizza locations in Japan, Germany, New Zealand and Australia. I met him on a catamaran and through conversation I realised that he was one of the leading people with Domino’s Pizza. Even though I graduated in mechanical engineering, I always wanted to get into a different entrepreneurial story, and the Croatian market has great potential. Although we already have strong players and good quality, Croats love pizza, and we offer an American style of pizza that is completely different from anything currently available on our market,” Svidan revealed to Poslovni Dnevnik.
The opening of the first Domino’s Pizza in Croatia, which will be located on Kneza Mislava street across from the Sheraton Hotel in Zagreb, is expected in April or May 2020, and the first special feature that Sviben points out is that the pizzas will be prepared on site, the pastry will be mixed and the ingredients/toppings will be placed in front of customers.
According to him, the key to the success of Domino’s Pizza, besides its quality, is the speed of its delivery, which takes a maximum of 30 minutes. ”The location is being remodeled and we plan to open another one by the end of the year and continue our expansion of Domino’s Pizza in Croatia. In Kosovo, more precisely in Pristina, where they already have six pizzerias, I tried it for the first time and was delighted,” he said.
”Most of the ingredients are sourced from foreign suppliers because Domino’s is extremely rigorous when it comes to the quality and requirements of certification, but we believe that there will be more of them on the current list, which already boasts several domestic suppliers. We aim to activate the Croatian economy and producers who offer quality and there’s no reason why we shouldn’t have flour or vegetables from, for example, Slavonia,” says Sviben.
As for the employees at Domino’s Pizza in Croatia, they are currently looking for four managers, and the rest of the team they plan to hire are students who, he says, will be offered good hourly rates.
“We want 70-80 percent of our employees to be students who will be able to progress quickly here,” says Sviben.
