Split and Losinj – a 2015 dream tourism combination.
This year, Jutarnji List’s reporters have visited 30 destinations on the Adriatic coast in the search for hidden gems of the Croatian coast, and they have finally declared the winners. Split and Lošinj have won a total of 95 points each, out of the maximum of one hundred points, reports Jutarnji List on August 20, 2015.
Travelling from Savudrija to Cavtat, three groups of journalists have travelled thousands of kilometres and many nautical miles. The aim was to check the most famous resorts in order to assess the Croatian tourist reality. In assessing specific destinations, the journalists were guided by strict criteria, such as the quality of beaches, infrastructure, cultural and sports facilities, and the entire destination image. Although some places like the islands of Mljet, Cres or Vis have again surprised with their beauty and pristine nature, they could not compete to win because of some other deficiencies. What is certain, however, is that everybody is working hard to improve their destination.
In recent years, major cities on the Adriatic have suddenly come to the top of the list, as opposed to the previous years when the title of top destination was usually won by smaller tourist towns. Split in particular has developed its tourist image. Split is the seventeen centuries old Palace of Diocletian, coffee on the waterfront and the Piazza, Peristil, Prokurative, St. Duje Cathedral, Marjan and Sustipan, Bačvice beach. The farmers’ market and Peškarija (fish market) are real architectural monuments, the essence of Dalmatia and the soul of a Mediterranean city. Split used to be visited by many tourists before, but they were mostly just in transit.
Its tourist story was awoken two years ago by the electronic music festival Ultra Europe, which has brought visitors from about a hundred countries around the world. Since then, hostel and private apartment capacities have increased, but the city is definitely lacking in luxurious hotels. Split beaches – Bačvice, Žnjan, Obojena i Kašjuni – perhaps are not the most exotic ones on the Adriatic Sea, but have all necessary facilities and the clean sea. In addition to rich cultural program, Split offers excellent (daily) trips.
Split and Lošinj are on the top of the list with 95 points. They are followed by Dubrovnik (91), Rovinj and Zadar (87), Brač (86), Rab and Pula (84), and Hvar (83).
