A Home from Home in the Heart of Split: Villa Spiza

Total Croatia News

A couple of weeks ago I was working away in the late afternoon in one of my favourite places in Split, Villa Spiza. I was the only customer in the place when the door opened and we were joined by a hairy young man with a guitar on his back.

“You have concert here?” he asked in poor English with what I took to be a Spanish accent.

“No.”

“You have food?”

“Yes. This is a restaurant.”

“Your food is good?”

“Yes.”

“Maybe I can play a concert for some food?”

With a live audience of just one customer, and he deep into his blogging duties on his laptop, there was not a great call for the concert, and our Spanish friend was soon on his way. I smiled and the lady behind the counter smiled.

Villa Spiza is that kind of place. It is like being on the set of Friends, but with a Dalmatian twist. If you are into people watching, there are few better places in Split to be, as small real life dramas are played out in the relaxed setting of one of Dalmatia’s best (and most affordable) eateries. If you are on your own in town and fancy some company, Villa Spiza is the place to go – very friendly welcome and a very diverse clientele. It is certainly not the poshest place in town, but there is absolutely no compromise on the quality of the food. It is outstanding.

I do like the latest addition to the Villa Spiza restaurant, pictured above. One of its quirks was that it was a restaurant with no tables, and the only place to eat was on the counter. Not a problem, as the food really is that good, but a nice addition in recent days, as these practical fold-out trays have been added. For a little more info on Villa Spiza, click here.
