Mediterranean Coast Day is celebrated on September 25th.
“Small islands, Champions of Sustainability” is the name of the international traveling photographic exhibition, which has opened at the French Alliance on Marmontova Street in Split as part of the Mediterranean Coast Day celebration. The organizer of the exhibition is the Small Island Initiative (SMILO) association, in cooperation with the French Embassy in Croatia and the Center for Regional Action Programs of Priority Action (CRA/PPA).
The exhibition emphasizes the importance of natural and cultural sights, as well as the need for sustainable management of island areas in order to preserve their heritage. Small islands are fragile and unique and are at the forefront of global change. These are areas and places of innovation that are constantly being renewed, due to their own sustainable development. Recycling waste, preserving water resources, promoting renewable energy sources, protecting biodiversity, valorizing cultural heritage… More than a call for travel, this exhibition highlights the concrete activities of more than thirty small islands around the world in response to the challenges of the future. The photos that are exhibited have already been displayed in France, Spain, Tunisia and Mozambique, and in Croatia in Zlarin, Vis, Zagreb and Orebić.
Since 2014, the initiative for “Small Sustainable Islands”, supported by the French Coast Guard (Conservatoire du littoral), has also developed today through the SMILO associations, with the aim of supporting dialogue and monitoring the participants who work daily on island protection and the evaluation of their procedures. This exhibition offers an opportunity to express the uniqueness of the relationship between man and his environment. This approach is part of the creation of a solid international network of small islands, oriented towards sustainable development. In the long run, SMILO wants to create a comprehensive network for sharing experiences and good practices, and encouraging and rewarding local efforts by its members. The exhibition “Small Islands, Champions of Sustainability” will be open until October 4th, while at Đardin, the central location for Coast Day events, you can see the exhibition on Tuesday, September 25th from 14:00 to 17:00.
