Split Port Expects 5 Million Passengers this Year, Suggests Crowd Solutions for Next Year

Director of the Port Authority of Split, Vice Mihanović, says that they are looking to apply for EU Funds for the project of Port Stinice and work on a conceptual solution for the expansion of Obala kneza Domagoja.

According to the estimates of Vice Mihanović, director of the Port Authority of Split, by the end of the year, 5 million passengers are expected to travel through the city harbor, reports Dalmatinski Portal on August 12, 2017.

“So far, we have had over 4.5 million passengers, and we hope that by the end of the year we will get to the magical number of five million passengers. Regardless of the increase in the number of passengers, vehicle and vessel traffic has flowed smoothly. We have noted a steady rise in the number of passengers in the port, and the visitors in the city do not fear that guests from cruisers will overwhelm us. To this regard, the data shows a drop in cruisers of around 18 percent. Crowds in the heart of the tourist season are expected when we have such large numbers of tourists, and the problem is the access to roads, but we are also getting through this well,” said Vice Mihanović before announcing a project that should reduce traffic at the port.

“This year, we will co-finance a project with port boarding assistants that will regulate the traffic of passengers and vehicles throughout the day, and thus considerably lessen the traffic at the port. In addition, we have taken some steps to review the traffic solutions at the entrance to the harbor with traffic experts and court attorneys, and we will start work on this immediately in September. We will see if this will offer us a better quality solution,” added Mihanović.

Mihanović also said that they were working intensively on the project of Port Stinice for which they plan to apply for EU funds.

“In between the shipyard and the North Port, we foresee ro-ro ramps (roll on/roll off ramps). We have more than 170,000 trucks annually and in the first phase, we plan to shift truck traffic, thus contributing to the relocation of traffic in the city center,” he added.

The plan also includes the expansion of Obala kneza Domagoja from the footpath to Gat Sv. Duje which is currently in the phase of the conceptual solution.

“Given the pressure that is happening in this part of the coast, the width of the coast has proved to be insufficient, and with this project, that pressure would be significantly reduced,” concluded Mihanović.
