Split’s most recognized performance of the summer returns to Peristyle this weekend!

Verdi’s Aida, the eternal and most recognizable sign of the Split summer, returns to the ever so unique and spectacular setting of Peristyle this weekend. The performances, which are scheduled for Saturday, July 22nd and Monday, July 24th, will be directed by maestro Ivo Lipanović. The upcoming performances will be the 120th and 121st performances of the “opera over opera” at Split’s Imperial Square, reports Split.com.hr on July 21, 2017.

This year’s singing division is composed of top singers with great international reputation. As a protagonist, the Bulgarian soprano Cvetelina Vasileva will perform in the title role and is a singer who played an impressive part in Turandot last year. The role of Radames is entrusted to one of the most interesting tenors of today’s music scene, Zoran Todorovic. Italian soprano Raffaella Angeletti will play Amneris and the role of Ramphis will be interpreted by the bass opera of Split, national opera champion Ivica Čikeš. Amonasro will be celebrated by the Croatian bass baron Giorgio Surian, while the roles of messengers and priests are entrusted to Vinko Maroević and Antonis Tesker. This Aida production premiered at the 60th Split Summer back in 2014, however, directed by Drazen Siriščević then. It was remembered as one of the most beautiful at Peristyle to date.

“Diocletian built Peristyle as though he had Aida in mind. The stage and viewpoint fit into one, and this is the greatest value that an ambience can give to performers and audiences,” said the press in 1954 after Aida performed at Peristyle for the first time during the first Split Summer Festival. Since then, Verdi’s opera has become the long-standing constellation of the festival – being marked as one of the most talked about, most influential, most visited, most popular, and most recognizable shows of the Split Summer Festival; its eternal trademark.

Bulgaria’s soprano Cvetelina Vasileva returns to the Split Summer stage where she debut last year in the title role of the premier production of Turandot. Her performance received critical acclaim, highlighting ”the voice of incredible softness and flexibility, but also strength in expressive peaks…”. Zoran Todorovic is one of the most interesting tenors of today’s music scene. Throughout his respected international career, he has performed at many major music centers around the world. Beginning at the State Opera in Hannover as a lyrical tenor, he gradually expanded his repertoire into Spinto and Drama Fah. He has collaborated with the most important contemporary artists such as Montserrat Caballé, Edita Gruberová, June Anderson, Violeta Urman, Elisa Garança, Maria Guleghina and Anja Harteros, who are his regular partners in opera performances, concerts and television performances. The Italian drama soprano Raffaella Angeletti will have her debut performance at the Split Summer Festival, but has already sang on some of the most significant Italian and world opera stages.
